Our next study of art terminology will deal with Texture.
From our text, Art Across Time, "texture is the quality conveyed by the surface feel of an object" (Adams). The best part about art and the variety of materials available to artists is that you can actually create the texture of your piece by applying specific material to your work such as fur or velvet. This is called physical texture or tactile texture. Here are some examples:
You can also create the illusion of this texture by drawing it as it appears. This is called visual texture. Each of these different forms of texture can be created with a pencil carefully.
We can also look at texture in a different way: whether or not the texture occurs naturally in nature which is called natural texture, or the texture is man-made which is called artificial texture. Here are some example of natural texture, white oak bark, sand, river stones:
And now check out these artificial textures: astroturf, latex rubber, velvet....
