Grade 9 Art - Day 56, "The Warhol Sessions Continued!"

Perhaps the best element to come out of our Warhol discussions was how interested this class is in a large collaboration!  After studying Warhol's many collaborations with the likes of Basquiat, Kluver, Hackett, and The Velvet Underground, the students felt compelled to complete a large-scale collaboration!

After a great deal of brainstorming and interaction, we decided on the following project:

  • find something that is made up of pieces
  • disassemble it
  • distribute the pieces to the students
  • have the students paint, draw, sculpt using the pieces
  • reassemble the pieces into its former form (note key element of design!)
We were then stuck with the question of what our project's donor form would be...enter the motorcycle!!

AWESOME!!  Thanks to the auto shop at the school for letting us "graffiti" one of its prized possessions!  Today we being the task of disassembling the Yamaha and priming the components.

We arrived at a couple of rules for creating this piece:
  • each component must be completed using complementary colours or black/white
  • the theme will be "Modern Warholians"
Stay tuned as this project unfolds!

In the meantime, let's have a look at the following link to a video bio on Warhol to help us better understand our muse in this creation:
